In 1938, designers Kurchan, Ferrari-Hardoy, and Bonnet took inspiration from the folding chair used by British officers in the 19th century: the Tripolina chair.

The name AA is a nod to "L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui", the oldest architecture magazine in France.
